Read, Talk, Wonder, Solve!

💡 Check out this week’s tip for family literacy practice:
📖 Reading starts before children can read words. Literacy development begins long before formal reading instruction. Talking, listening, storytelling, and looking at books all contribute to early literacy development.— National Center for Education Statistics
Be a Literacy Detective! Look at a picture, book, sign, recipe, or something you encounter during your day. Ask your child: “What can you figure out even though the words don’t tell you?” “What evidence helped you figure that out?”
Have family members watch and listen for when literacy is used without actually reading a book. Ask each other how literacy was used.

4th & 5th Graders are invited to join in CSD’s Junior Book Blitz AKA Battle of the Books! Throughout the year, students get to read from a collection of 12 books, then compete in teams to recall information from the books.
In February, we’ll have a school competition and the winning team competes at the district level. If a Granite team wins at the district, we will be invited to compete in the State Battle of the Books competition!!!
This is a fantastic way to promote reading and teamwork! Kids can practice talking about books, trying books they normally wouldn’t pick up, and learn to analyze and critique text. Please sign up when information comes home in a few weeks!

Each month our Granite School Community Council (SCC) meets to discuss school plans, budgets, and goals. The SCC is responsible for writing our Land Trust plan, TSSA plan, Digital Citizenship plans, School Safety plans, and more. Our SCC hosts STEAM night and participates in allocation of approximately $100,000 of school budgets as well.
IF you’d like to participate on Granite’s SCC this year, please complete this nomination form. Nominations will be open through August 30th. In the event that we have more nominations than seats available, we will hold an election.

It was great to see so many families at Back to School Night! Thank you for taking time from your summer to come learn about the school year. The buzz of excitement was contagious. If you missed the school information video, you can see it by clicking the link below. Please make sure all Granite grown-ups watch it to help keep our students safe and families informed.

Over the summer, Mrs. Carr, our amazing art teacher, found a fridge door and mounted it to our cafeteria wall! She wanted to create a place to honor our student artists and create a place of honor for kids to share their from home here at school.
This week your students have talked about the fridge with Mrs. Carr and learned the requirements.

• Artwork for the fridge must be created at home, not at school.
• It must be original art (not coloring pages or internet trends)
• Artwork should be 2-dimensional (flat) and 8.5 x 11 or smaller

Students can give their original artwork to Mrs. Carr (one submission at a time) and she’ll post it on the fridge for a while. She’ll do her best to return art to students, but we can’t guarantee 100% success. I can’t wait to see what our creative Grizzlies share!
