Boo to the Flu

Next Monday evening we will have a flu shot clinic available for our families. Everyone is welcome to come and get your seasonal shot from 4pm to 7pm Monday, Sept. 21st. Community Nursing Services will bill insurance for all immunizations (with no copay). For those without insurance, the cost will be $14 per child vaccination and $35 per adult vaccination.

Book Fair – The PTA book fair will be open: Monday 3:45-7:45Tuesday 8:00-9:00 Wednesday 12:15-2:00 for students to go purchase books during lunch Wednesday 3:45-7:45 
Books & Bagels We are so excited for our books and bagels event. Please remember that all students need to be accompanied by an adult. When you’re done with Books and Bagels, please leave through the main office with your children. School supervision starts at 8:45. 
Boo to the Flu Stop by our library to get your family flu shots on Monday from 4:00-7:00pm. See information above. 

Picture Day is September 30. Forms will go home next week. All students will have a picture taken for class composites. Please see attached flyer for more information and a pre-order link. 

Apply Now: Last Call for SALTA TestingTime is running out to apply to test into Canyons School District’s SALTA magnet program for the 2027-2028 school year. Students in kindergarten through the seventh grade can apply online through midnight on Friday, Oct. 2. No late applications will be accepted. 
SALTA — Supporting Advanced Learners Toward Achievement — serves students who demonstrate significantly high cognitive and academic abilities in comparison to peers. Due to the time-intensive and rigorous nature of the process for determining a student’s fit for the program, parents are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the testing requirements well before completing an application. More information about SALTA testing and the application process can be found at canyonsdistrict.org. 

Read, Talk, Wonder, Solve!

Check out this week’s tip for family literacy practice:
You can turn an apple into a literacy adventure! Reading a recipe, comparing apples, describing what you notice, learning where apples grow, or telling a family apple story all give children opportunities to build vocabulary, communicate ideas, ask questions, and use critical thinking.Family Tip: You don’t need a worksheet or special lesson. An apple, a conversation, and a curious question can create a literacy moment. 
While eating or preparing apples together, ask:“If you had to convince someone that apples are the perfect fall fruit, what evidence would you use?”
Apple Investigation Pick two different kinds of apples at the grocery store, farmers market, or from an apple tree.Read: Read the  names, labels, signs, or information about the apples.Talk: Describe the apples using specific words: crisp, sweet, tart, juicy, smooth, crunchy, soft. Wonder: Ask, “What do you wonder about these apples?”Solve: Have your child decide: Which apple would be best for making applesauce, and which would be best for eating? How do you know?”

We’ve had some great questions about our attendance field trip plans, and we appreciate you taking the time to ask! We’re finalizing the details  and will send out specific information next week about the plan, including the attendance data that we use to determine half- and whole-day absences consistent with district policy. 
We’re also excited to celebrate that 20 out of our 24 school days so far have had 93% or more of our students present! Thank you for your continued support in helping our students be at school, ready to learn, each day!

The Canyons Family Center has begun accepting registrations for its fall lineup of classes for parents and students. Located at Mt. Jordan Middle School, the Center is a free resource for all Canyons District families. Its licensed staff provide individual counseling and sponsor student support groups and parent education classes. 
Class topics range from how to cope with ADHD and anxiety to building self-esteem. Families can also register for intakes for counseling services or referral to private mental health providers. 
Fall courses begin the week of Sept. 8. To register and learn more, visit canyonsdistrict.org. Questions? Center staff are available Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 801-826-8190.

Reflections

Your kids have come home with flyers for Reflections. Please take a minute to discuss with your students what their culture means to them and help them brainstorm ideas to create for reflections. The theme is “What my Culture Means to Me.” 
Submissions due online at utahpta.org/ref by October 25th.
