“Every kid down at Granite Elementary liked Christmas a lot,
But the Grinch, who lived just north of Granite, did NOT!
The Grinch hated Christmas! The whole Christmas season!
Now, please don’t ask why. No one quite knows the reason.
It could be his head wasn’t screwed on just right.
It could be, perhaps, that his shoes were too tight.
But I think that the most likely reason of all,
May have been that his heart was two sizes too small.
Whatever the reason, His heart or his shoes, He stood there on Christmas Eve, disliking this news.
‘Tomorrow is Christmas! It’s practically here!’ Then he growled, with his Grinch fingers nervously drumming, ‘I MUST find some way to stop Christmas from coming!’
And the Grinch got a wonderful, awful idea!
‘I know just what to do!” the Grinch laughed in his throat.
And he made a quick Santy Claus hat and a coat.
And he chuckled, and clucked, ‘What a great Grinchy trick!
With this coat and this hat, I look just like Saint Nick!’
Now the elves in Granite’s kindergarten got wind of his plan,
So they gathered together to take a stand.
‘This cannot happen, we will not let him pretend
To be Santa Claus!’ they all shouted while shaking their hands.
But alas, the elves were too late to Mount Crumpet,
They could hear the Grinch descending and playing at trumpet.
They rushed back to Granite as fast as can be,
And they caught that Grinch stealing a tree!
Then they looked in his sleigh and saw something unpleasant,
For his sleigh was filled with everyone’s presents!
‘Stop Mr. Grinch, why are you taking the gifts,
And that tree, why are you taking that Mr. Grinch?
But, you know, that old Grinch was so smart and so slick, He thought up a lie, and he thought it up quick! ‘Why, my sweet little elves’ the fake Santy Claus lied, ‘There’s a light on this tree that won’t light on one side. So I’m taking it home to my workshop, my dears. I’ll fix it up there. Then I’ll bring it back here.’
But his fib didn’t fool these kindergarten elves,
For they knew the real Santa Claus themselves.
‘Stop being naughty and tell the truth,
We know who you are under that suit!’
The elves stood in front of his sleigh,
And then they had this to say,
‘You can’t stop Christmas from coming to our school,
So please, Mr. Grinch, stop being so cruel!
Don’t you understand that Christmas doesn’t come from a store,
Christmas, my friend, means a little bit more!’
And what happened then? Well…at Granite they say,
That the Grinch’s small heart grew 3 sizes that day!
And the minute his heart didn’t feel quite so tight, He whizzed with his load through the bright morning light, And he brought back the presents and the tree,
And the kindergarten elves all shouted in glee!”
