What do we do in Kindergarten?
Morning Meeting: We start each day as a class with a greeting, message, activity and a share. Each student gets a moment to be recognized and feel part of our class. Our EEC buddies also join us first thing each day.
95% Foundations: The science of reading! We work on literacy skills that teaches phonological awareness, letter formation and sounds, and builds a strong base of reading for each student to be successful K-5.
Brain Breaks: Little minds get tired from working so hard so we ensure that all students have opportunities throughout the day to jump, dance and sing. We are constantly moving from the rug to desks and movement in between that allows for age appropriate classroom learning.
Wonders Foundations: This is an ELA program focused on building strong literacy skills including story structure, phonemic awareness, phonics and fluency through explicit instruction.
Small Groups: Students spend small group rotations with instruction from their teacher and our reading specialist that teaches based on where students are in their reading journey. Groups range from letter recognition to reading comprehension.
Math: Our Envision math program focuses on numbers 1-20, making 10, addition & subtraction equations, shapes, patterns and number identification 1-100.
Lunch & Recess: Students may bring a lunch from home or get a school lunch! They get to eat, socialize and then go out to recess.
Calendar & Read Aloud: We get to read a story, talk about the weather, date, work on numbers, sing and do calming yoga.
Science, Social Studies & Music: Monday-Wednesday we do Science or Social Studies, Thursday we go to music. We will learn about- severe weather, how plants grow, animal habitats, community helpers, parts of the body, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, American Symbols, our 5 senses and force. In music we will sing about the months of the year, the seasons, alphabet, numbers, American Symbols and play silly dancing songs.
Oral Language Block: There are 5 stations in our OLB time; house, library, writing/coloring, math & building. We spend 40 minutes per day with imaginative play, developing our communication skills and learning problem solving with peers. This is a very important time for kindergarten and we find incredible social growth in the kindergarten year.
Boosters: We get to go to Boosters at the end of the day Monday-Thursday with some AMAZING teachers! Students will go to library, STEM, Art & Playworks. Students will develop a love of books, have some of the coolest hands-on Stem lessons, be given flexibility and creativity to create in art, and learn about/play a variety of sports in Playworks. This is a very fun part of the day for kinder kids!
We look forward to an amazing year with your students!
