The 4th graders went on an exciting field trip to This is the Place in September. Our first stop was the train. We boarded the train as it took us around the park. We were able to see the animals, pioneer homes and businesses, and the statues that pay respect to the early people of Utah.
Next, we went to the handcarts. Here the students got in groups of 4-5 and took turns pushing and pulling handcarts over the rocks and dirt. You can’t push too hard or pull too softly.
Then we were on to the Blacksmith Shop. We learned that the blacksmith is one of the most respected people in the town because he helps so much. He makes the silverware for eating, the nails for building, and all the tools needed for pioneer life.
Our last stop was to the Pioneer School. We learned how to answer questions respectfully, standing and holding our hands just right. If you were disrespectful or disobeyed the rules you might have to stand in the corner holding a book in your hands or sit with a Dunce hat on your head. The students had fun learning to read and write the pioneer alphabet.
It was a successful field trip with lots of smiles and good times.
