Principal’s News – May 2017

We are in the final stretch of our 2016-2017 school year. There are many things to reflect on and to be thankful for. Spending time with your students to consider some of the highlights for 2016-2017 is a great way to encourage positive thinking, problem solving, and perseverance.

There will be a few changes to our staff at Granite Elementary next year. Jan Hansen, our amazing head secretary, will be retiring. She is a pivotal part of our school community and we will greatly miss her. We wish her well on her retirement and deeply thank her for her love and dedication to our school. Mrs. McRoberts will be returning to Indiana with her family this summer. We want to wish her and her family a safe and smooth transition and thank her for her commitment and dedication. We will miss her contributions and involvement in the faculty and community. Mrs. Smith, in third grade, will be retiring this year. We want to thank Mrs. Smith for her time and dedication to Granite Elementary and wish her well in her retirement.

With these changes we have hired 2 new teachers. Miss Justine (soon to be) Perry is our new 5th grade teacher. She currently teaches 5th grade at Traverse Mountain in Alpine School District. Ms. Velazquez will be the new 3rd grade teacher. She currently teaches 4th grade in Jordan School District. Mrs. Anderson and Mrs. Oakeson will job share in 2nd grade.

SAGE testing for Granite Elementary will begin for most teachers on Monday, May 8th. Please check with your students 3rd, 4th or 5th grade teacher for specific testing times and dates. You can help your child be prepared by helping them get a good night’s rest, eat a healthy breakfast, and send them off with words of encouragement to simply try their best.

Common Sense Media has released the report Plugged In Parents: Attitudes, Behaviors and Role Models. As teachers, we are also role models and need to be reminded that our behaviors are viewed by our students in ways we may not think.  Please take a moment to look at this infographic Inforgraphic and this article including video.

March 2017 – Principal’s News

This week Granite Elementary will participate in White Ribbon Week. Monday we had a kick off assembly with the Utah Grizzlies. We discussed setting goals, believing in yourself, showing kindness, and teamwork. We will connect this great message to White Ribbon Week on how to make wise choices on social media and how to use social media to make a positive difference. On Tuesday, March 7th Granite will host a social media conference for parents. Debbie Dujanovic and a retired FBI Cyber Crimes supervision, Petra Butler, will discuss the realities of internet safety. Join us at 6:30pm in the gym for this raw and honest discussion on how to implement internet safety in your home.

With just one look outside we see a glimpse of spring. Sun is shining. Snow is falling. Please continue to help your students dress for the weather. A little sunshine and vitamin D is good for all of us. If the temperature drops below 21 we will keep them inside. We continue to monitor the air quality. If we experience a RED day, all students will remain inside. If we have an orange day students with asthma and sensitive issues will remain inside.

If you know of any incoming Kindergarteners for the 2017-2018 school year, please have them call the office to register.

We are proud to announce that Granite Elementary raised $4242.42 for our sister school, Magale Primary School, in Kenya. Way to go Granite Grizzlies!
