Principal’s News – November 2017

Fall is in the air. Snow is just around the corner. Shhh, don’t tell a few of us this news. Some of us prefer the heat. This time of year we encourage you to dress your students in layers. Send a jacket, sweatshirt, or sweater for when we feel the chill.

Toys often are a disruption in the classroom. Unless you have made arrangements for your student to bring a toy for an activity please keep all toys at home. You can help us out by reminding your student to leave toys at home and checking their backpacks on a regular basis.

Discover the Internet together

Be the one to introduce your child to the Internet. For both parent and child, it is an advantage to discover the Internet together. Try to find web sites that are exciting and fun so that together you achieve a positive attitude to Internet exploration. This could make it easier to share both positive and negative experiences in the future.

Granite Groovy Tips

1. Snacky?...grab a piece of fruit, a handful of nuts, an avocado.  Eating healthy foods first will reduce your desire to make unhealthy choices.

2. Put on some dancing music....and then, DANCE!  You'll burn calories and your kids just might join you.

3.  Drink a full glass of water before each meal.  Many times we think we are hungry, when we are really thirsty.

What are you thankful for? Let November be a month where you start a family journal to keep track of all you are thankful for. This is a great way to reflect on what is positive in your life, community, and world. In the morning or at dinner time you can write down a few ideas each day. Being thankful is a great way to create a positive environment.

Thank you to all who joined us for Family, Fitness, Fun Night. We had a great time playing tag, jumping rope, and doing yoga. There will be future events for Family Nights at Granite Elementary. More info will be available in the coming months.

November 2017 Internet Tip

Agree with your child on rules for Internet use in your home

Try to reach an agreement with your child on the guidelines which apply to Internet use in your household. Here are some tips to get started:
Discuss when and for how long it is acceptable for your child to use the Internet

Agree how to treat personal information (name, address, telephone, e-mail)
Discuss how to behave towards others when gaming, chatting, e-mailing or messaging

Agree what type of sites and activities are OK or not OK in our family.

March 2017 – Principal’s News

This week Granite Elementary will participate in White Ribbon Week. Monday we had a kick off assembly with the Utah Grizzlies. We discussed setting goals, believing in yourself, showing kindness, and teamwork. We will connect this great message to White Ribbon Week on how to make wise choices on social media and how to use social media to make a positive difference. On Tuesday, March 7th Granite will host a social media conference for parents. Debbie Dujanovic and a retired FBI Cyber Crimes supervision, Petra Butler, will discuss the realities of internet safety. Join us at 6:30pm in the gym for this raw and honest discussion on how to implement internet safety in your home.

With just one look outside we see a glimpse of spring. Sun is shining. Snow is falling. Please continue to help your students dress for the weather. A little sunshine and vitamin D is good for all of us. If the temperature drops below 21 we will keep them inside. We continue to monitor the air quality. If we experience a RED day, all students will remain inside. If we have an orange day students with asthma and sensitive issues will remain inside.

If you know of any incoming Kindergarteners for the 2017-2018 school year, please have them call the office to register.

We are proud to announce that Granite Elementary raised $4242.42 for our sister school, Magale Primary School, in Kenya. Way to go Granite Grizzlies!
